January Update

Happy New Year!

We’re very excited that 007 is off to a great start. We kicked off the year and our spring semester at the “President’s Meeting” on January 2nd. I was given the stage to introduce our Title III grant (check out the powerpoint presentation), and how it meshes with our two other major institutional strengthening initiatives — SACS (accreditation reaffirmation) and continuous improvement through the bi-annual survey of student satisfaction, aptly named: Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE).

We have creatively selected a propellor to signify these three initiatives as moving in parallel and propelling Careteret Community College to a stronger, more successful future.CCC Propellor   As you can see from the inexorable work that Patrick Keough (our Distance Learning sensei) is carrying out, we are already propelling our distance learning program to better places.

We want to welcome our new Title III staff assistant, Ms. Jeanette Young. She is an exceptional asset to the team, bringing a wide range of skills to the project. We are very happy to have Jeanette on board!

On January 17 & 18, we are being visited by two very important individuals. Dr. Terri Manning from Central Piedmont Community College, and an expert in outcomes assessment, will be holding a series of workshops for full and part-time faculty and adjuncts.  The workshops will introduce instructors to the idea of learning outcomes — their rationale, their importance, and their construction.

We are also being visited by Dr. Rita O’Sullivan from the College of Education at UNC-Chapel Hill.  Rita’s forte is conducting evaluation using a collaborative approach to data collection, meaning that she uses a more qualitative technique in measuring the implementation and effectiveness of the project.

We are very excited to have both of these individuals working with us, and know that they are going to help propel us toward a more successful college.

  1. I was very encouraged by the meeting yesterday, by refinging some of our objectives, I feel we have more realistic expectations. Great job!
