Distance Learning Update

Filed under: Distance Learning - P. Keough — Don Staub @ 11:41 am

things are happening on the distance learning front. Our team of 10 dl pioneers continue to move forward writing and producing their instructional podcasts and upgrading their online courses. My work study student Cameron Lockey has been designing course banners for a variety of instructor blackboards, in addition to putting the finishing touches to our ITunes U site. Terrence Smith has written the code for the instructor access to ITunes U and Cameron is writing the Meta Deta protocol for our instructors to use when uploading their media content to their specified curriculum areas of the Itunes site. Terence has gone above and beyond the call of duty to get this complex code written for us.

I’m really excited about bringing Pre-Ah Hill onboard as our Title III Distance Learning assistant. She will finish up her work in Continuing Education and start working with me early March. Pre-AH is a welcome addition to our Title III team and will be a great asset in helping move all our diverse and exciting dl initiatives forward.

Online Math Professor, Robin Rider from ECU will be giving our Math faculty a workshop about teaching Math online this Friday Feb. 16th. This training is going to help Jennifer Eyl design and develop her online Mat 161 Algebra course scheduled to be taught this Fall 2007.

I am giving a presention at the upcoming Community College Distance Learning Conference in Durham next Monday, February 19 and Laurie Freshwater, Mary Walton and Don Staub are also attending this 3 day conference, thanks to the Tittle III grant professional development funds specified for faculty and staff. I hope to unveil CCC Itunes U in the next two weeks. It has been a long road and lots of hard work on many folks part, but it is now paying off. This is going to be a great complement to blackboard and empower our faculty to incorporate more sophisticated and visual media content into their online courses. Click here to see what our site looks like – you must have ITunes on your computer to view this CCC ITunes

Don and I met with Kim McGinnis to discuss online assessment issues and stratagies. She wrote her Thesis on this subject and has a wealth of information to share with us. We have scheduled a meeting with our entire DL Team for March 16th at 9:30 in the CMast Video Conference Room to brainstorm and share our ideas, experiences and assessments stratagies with Kim and each other.

  1. All of this work has been very rewarding. I am looking forward learning more of the technology as I go along.

  2. Once our faculty feel more comfortable and proficient producing and incorporating rich media instructional content into their online courses the rewards are great for both faculty and students Johnny. I appreciate you enthusiasm and willingness to break away from what used to be done online to exploring new, innovative and creative ways to teach our course content online.
