Distance Learning Update July 5, 2007

Filed under: Distance Learning - P. Keough — Don Staub @ 9:58 am

As usual there is a lot of activity on a variety of issues and initiatives in Distance Learning. Our July 12th Blackboard Boot camp is full and online faculty are now signing up for our August sessions. We are running some training modules in the evening to accommodate some of our adjuncts who have requested this. My goal is to get 100% of our online faculty teaching this fall through modules 1 and 2.

The Distance Learning Advisory committee met in June and are now addressing (exploring) issues concerning online student support services. A sub-committee has been established to identify some solutions, options and alternatives concerning this important issue. You can see (and participate in) our conversation about this on the DL Advisory Blog.

moodleI attended a two day workshop in Greenville (Pitt Community College) concerning the Moodle online course management system. There is a big concern at the state level that Blackboard is getting to expensive and is on the road to pricing itself out of the Community College market.

Dr. Bill Randall,Associate Vice President for Learning Technology at the North Carolina Community College System has asked 5 NC Community Colleges to begin testing and using the “open source – free” Moodle platform to see if it is a suitable replacement for Blackboard. I heard about this and felt I should be in the loop on this issue so we don’t get blindsided if the state tells us to pull the plug on Blackboard. I realize we have put a great deal of time, energy and resources into Blackboard training however it is my belief that we should always be prepared for change if and/or when it comes. You can read about my thoughts and some other online instructor observations concerning Moodle on my Blog. Please feel free to add your 2 cents about this if you like.

Pre-Ah and our ECU intern Rob Robinson have been busy training faculty “one on one” and helping many of them add images, banners, and audio podcasts to their courses. We (IT) is also in the process of moving ALL CCC online courses over to Blackboard 7.2 so se can clean off the old BB server and use it for other things.
